After her studies of education, philosophy, sociology and psychology at the University of Münster, Germany, Ingrid Lohmann was researcher in an interdisciplinary history of science project at the Institute of Didactics of Mathematics, University of Bielefeld, Germany.

Her doctoral thesis deals with Schleiermacher's theory of knowledge and the curriculum development during the Prussian educational reforms of the early 19th century.
Her Habilitation thesis is about the relations between Bildung and the evolving concepts of eloquence during the emergence of a bourgeois public sphere in Germany, 1750-1850.

She led several German Research Foundation (DFG) projects on the history of Jewish education and is editor of the History of Jewish Education in Germany series: Jüdische Bildungsgeschichte in Deutschland, 2001 ff., in 2014 with a volume on Naphtali Herz (Hartwig) Wessely's Divre shalom ve-emet (1782-1785).

Together with Christine Mayer she presented a paper on 'Origins of 18th Century Educational Theory and Practice in Rhetoric and Gender Anthropology' at the conference on Education & Culture in the Long Eighteenth Century (1688-1832), University of Cambridge, 2005.

Together with Julika Böttcher she presented a paper on 'Changing Images of Turks and Turkey - Self-Conceptions of German Educationists as Agents of Nation-Building in Imperial Germany and the Ottoman Empire' at the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE 37): Culture and Education, University of Istanbul, June 24-27, 2015.

Ingrid Lohmann is member of the advisory board of the Maimonides Centre for Advanced Studies (MCAS)–Jewish Scepticism and of the editorial board of Bildungsgeschichte. International Journal for the Historiography of Education (IJHE)
